Sunderland ended their Premier League season on Sunday by beating Chelsea 2-1 at home to secure Europa League football.

Goalkeeper Robin Roefs made a sharp early save from Palmer and used the ball well, but he may feel he should have kept out Palmer’s effort from the edge of the box after getting a hand to it. Rated six.

Right-back Lutsharel Geertruida found excellent positions before the break and Chelsea often lost track of him. He stayed solid throughout a trickier second half. Rated eight.

Centre-back Nordi Mukiele rose to the occasion, dominated his duels and carried a threat when he could. He has had a superb season, among the great signings Sunderland have made. Rated nine.

Luke O’Nien marked his return to the XI with an aggressive, composed display, using the ball smartly and threading a lovely pass through the lines in the move for the second goal. Rated eight.
