Trophée des Champions, Final, 05/01/25
Ousmane Dembélé got an injury-time winner as Paris Saint-Germain beat AS Monaco (1-0) in Qatar to retain the Trophée des Champions.
PSG dominated the first half in a sparsely-populated Stadium 974 in Doha. Philipp Köhn gifted Les Parisiens their first chance of the half, passing out poorly to Thilo Kehrer, allowing Désiré Doué to intercept and rifle a shot off the Monaco crossbar. However, he went on to redeem himself, keeping a lethargic Principality club in the tie.
He pulled off a save on the stretch from Ousmane Dembélé before making a finger-tip save from Lee Kang-in. Monaco’s chances were limited in the first half with Takumi Minamino working a save out of Gianluigi Donnarumma. It was one of just two shots on target for Monaco in the first half.
Les Monégasques were more expansive at the start of the second half. Köhn was once again called upon on two occasions before the hour mark, smothering Dembélé before making a smart save from Doué at his near post. But it was Monaco who had the better chances. Eliesse Ben Seghir benefitted from some good work from Vanderson, working a good save from Donnarumma at his near post.
He then returned the favour, setting up Vanderson at the back post minutes later. The Brazil international was inches away from giving Monaco the lead, striking the PSG post. Les Parisiens once again reasserted their control and almost took the lead. However, Köhn was decisive once again, getting a flailing hand on Hakimi’s near-post effort. The Morocco international had looked certain to score.
The game had looked to be edging towards a penalty shootout, however, there would be a twist in the tale as Fabián Ruiz picked out Ousmane Dembélé at the back post in the 92nd minute. The France international stroked home as they retained their Trophée des Champions crown.
Gianluigi Donnarumma – 5
Nuno Mendes – 6
Willian Pacho – 6
Marquinhos – 5
Achraf Hakimi – 7
PSG’s locomotive down the right and the most consistent source of ball progression. Solid defensively, he kept his compatriot, Ben Seghir, quiet for long periods of the game.
João Neves – 6
Vitinha – 6
Warren Zaïre-Emery – 5
Désiré Doué – 6
Lee Kang-in – 5
Ousmane Dembélé – 5
Quiet for much of the match and wasteful in the first half, he nonetheless popped up in the right place at the right time to net the winner.
Philipp Köhn – 8
The man-of-the-match, Köhn was the only reason why this game was not settled earlier. He showed mental resilience to recover from his error early in the match before going on to make five outstanding saves and nine in total. Will it be enough to allow him to retain his spot ahead of No.1 pick Radoslaw Majecki?
Caio Henrique – 5
Mohammed Salisu – 6
Thilo Kehrer – 5
Vanderson – 7
Denis Zakaria – 5
Aleksandr Golovin – 4
Eliesse Ben Seghir – 5
Takumi Minamino – 5
Maghnes Akliouche – 6
George Ilenikhena – 4
Too uninvolved and unable to link the play, it was a largely anonymous performance from Ilenikhena. With Monaco looking to recruit a striker this month, he didn’t make a strong argument for more minutes going forward.
