Earlier this week, Robert Lewandowski officially left Barcelona upon the expiry of his contract to join MLS side Chicago Fire. The 37-year-old turned down the chance to remain at the Spotify Camp Nou after being offered a wage cut and a reduced squad role, deciding instead to see off the twilight of his career in the United States.
Lewandowski had offers from clubs in Italy and Saudi Arabia, but in the end, he has chose Chicago to be his next home. But while it may be the right move for him, his wife Anna Lewandowska expressed strong doubts when she addressed her husband’s Barcelona exit recently, and according to Poland icon Zbigniew Boniek (via Sport), she was perfectly justified in doing so.
“Changing the beautiful and fantastic Barcelona, with an excellent climate, for the windy Chicago is not an easy situation – especially since Robert doesn’t go to Chicago to boost his career, but to finish it there. But he has made that decision and there is no need to be surprised. I also understand Anna. A woman has the right to express her doubts. I hope they dissipate quickly.
“It is difficult to intervene in this whole matter. I’ve known Robert for fifteen years and I wish him the best. I know perfectly well that this is a quiet end to his career. There will still be some satisfaction, there will be some goals. I hope that the national team still wins something from this. I wish Robert and his loved ones the best, that they do as well as possible.”
Up until 12 months ago, Lewandowski was still one of the best strikers in world football, so if he can stay fit, he should score plenty of goals in the MLS. However, his form could also depend on how well he and his family settle in Chicago, as it could take some time for them to get comfortable in a completely new setting.
