Northumbria Police are investigating alleged online racist abuse aimed at Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey after the 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur.
The Stadium of Light contest was feisty, with Brobbey involved in several flashpoints. An early challenge on Pedro Porro sparked debate over whether further punishment could have followed.
Later he appeared to nudge Cristian Romero into goalkeeper Antonín Kinský after a passage of play, angering visiting players. Sunderland secured victory through Nordi Mukiele’s second-half finish.
After full-time, Brobbey appeared to be targeted on social media following an Instagram post, with alleged discriminatory comments circulating. Northumbria Police said they are looking into those reports and condemned discrimination in all forms.
It is the third reported incident in three months, after allegations of racist abuse towards Romaine Mundle following February’s match against Fulham. The club also referenced Lutsharel Geertruida and urged swift action from the relevant bodies, reiterating that racism has no place in football or society and that the game must be safe and inclusive for all.
