Power struggle at FC Bayern? Why Eberl is under observation

Important decisions for the future are already being made in the background at FC Bayern. As has now become known, the future of sporting director Max Eberl in particular is being discussed internally to a greater extent than previously assumed. While two other Bayern bosses are likely to extend their contracts, the situation with Eberl is much more complicated

The contracts of several managers at the German record champions currently run until 2027, affecting Max Eberl, CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen and sporting director Christoph Freund. While the future of Dreesen and Freund is considered relatively clear within the club, the situation with Eberl appears to be much more open

According to BILD, although the 52-year-old’s work is generally viewed positively , there are apparently discussions within the club’s management about individual aspects of his management. Accordingly, internal discussions are currently taking place about whether to extend his contract beyond 2027

Doubts about Eberl’s working methods at the club

In particular, the cooperation with the decision-makers on the supervisory board plays an important role. According to statements from the club’s environment, there is criticism of how Eberl communicates his decisions internally

BILD head of soccer Christian Falk explains in the Bayern Insider podcast that it is primarily about details in the cooperation: „It’s always a bit about these nuances and, of course, about the cooperation with the top bosses.“

It was less about fundamental doubts about his competence, but rather about procedures within the decision-making processes

BILD reporter Heiko Niedderer also suggests that communication with those responsible at the club plays a role: „You still get the feeling at the club that he hasn’t quite warmed to these structures yet.“

According to this, decisions are sometimes made too late or are not agreed on comprehensively enough internally

Criticism of transfers and contract negotiations

According to Falk and Niedderer, another point concerns the economic component of some decisions, with some club managers seeing potential for improvement in contract agreements and transfer negotiations

Niedderer explains: „There are a few nuances. He’s actually doing a good job, but there are a few things where you say: Did you have to do that now?“

For example, the amount of individual contracts is apparently a recurring internal discussion, and in some cases the club would have liked to see tougher negotiations

Despite these points of criticism, however, observers emphasize that Eberl has a track record of sporting success, with several recent transfers being viewed positively within the club

Internal solution as an alternative?

Should the club ultimately decide against extending Eberl’s contract, BILD reports that possible alternatives are already being considered. FC Bayern could even opt for an internal solution. Falk explained that a constellation consisting of CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen and sports director Christoph Freund is being discussed as a possible structure. „With Dreesen and Freund, they actually see themselves in a good position,“ explained Falk

Freund enjoys a good reputation at the club and could take on a greater role in the sporting area

However, a final decision on the future of Max Eberl has not yet been made. As is so often the case at FC Bayern, sporting success is likely to play a decisive role in the end. After all, the season is traditionally measured by titles. Niedderer put it in a nutshell in the podcast: „In the end, a Bayern season is not judged in March, but by what is on the table in May.“

If the record champions win major titles this season, this could also have a significant impact on the assessment of Eberl’s work

One thing is certain: intensive discussions are already underway behind the scenes at FC Bayern about the future power structure at the club.
