Sunderland’s combative edge has been a theme of their Premier League return, alongside a defensive base under Regis Le Bris. They sit 11th after a 2-1 comeback at Newcastle United before the international break, having conceded 36 in 31, with only four sides shipping more.
According to Sunderland Echo, only five teams have collected more cards than the Black Cats this season. They have 67 in total, driven by 65 yellows and two reds, while Chelsea have seven reds and Bournemouth five.
Trai Hume has eight bookings, with Noah Sadiki and Reinildo Mandava on seven and Omar Alderete on six. They are the only Sunderland players with more than five cautions.
Hume’s eight is the third-highest in the division. Brighton defender Lewis Dunk leads the way on 10, the only player to reach double figures so far.
Reinildo was the first Sunderland player dismissed in the league, sent off after 33 minutes of the 1-1 home draw with Aston Villa in September. Luke O’Nien was then dismissed six minutes after coming on, near the end of the 3-0 defeat at Manchester City in December.
Enzo Le Fee, Alderete and Reinildo have committed 26 fouls each, just ahead of Dan Ballard and Hume on 25.
With seven games remaining, Sunderland can target an outside shot at Europe, and relegation worries have not really surfaced this season.
