Sunderland’s excellent run has left them with a genuine chance of a shock European place next season, and sharpened the focus on what each league position is worth. Wins over Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur either side of the international break have lifted Regis Le Bris’ side to 10th, two points off the top six and six behind Liverpool in fifth.
Sunderland Echo notes these are merit payments from UK and international pots combined, excluding commercial revenue or equal-share distributions.
Based on the current table, Arsenal in first would receive £53.1m, Manchester City £50.4m and Manchester United £47.7m. Liverpool in fifth stands at £42.4m and Chelsea sixth £39.8m.
If Sunderland hold 10th they would bank about £29.1m, effectively covering summer fees for Nordi Mukiele £12m, Robin Roefs £11.5m and Bertrand Traore £2.5m with £3.1m spare. Rising to seventh, currently Brentford, would push them beyond £35m, while catching Liverpool in fifth would be worth £42.4m.
Six games remain to change the picture. This weekend’s opponents, Aston Villa, currently fourth, are set for £45.0m, while rivals Newcastle United in 14th are due £18.6m, and Sunderland have not finished in the top half since 2010/11 under Steve Bruce, when they ended 10th.
