At a time when Real Madrid are desperately pushing the idea of the European Super League, PSG top boss Nasser Al-Khelaifi, as president of the European Football Clubs (EFC, formerly ECA), emerged as a formidable opponent.
In a recent assembly, the EFC was able to amass representatives of at least 800 clubs across Europe, including Barcelona president Joan Laporta.
During the assembly, Khelaifi even stated that the “the Super League was dead before it even started“.
However, the PSG president made sure not to antagonise Real Madrid too much and urged Los Blancos to join the union.
“We’re a family. We want everyone back, that’s true. Real Madrid too, we want everyone back. This is their family and their home, it’s everyone’s home,” he said (h/t Mundo Deportivo).

Khelaifi also expressed his happiness at Laporta’s decision to accept the invite and take part in the assembly, even though Barcelona have not completely joined the union.
In his address, Khelaifi stated how Europe doesn’t need another competition to challenge the UEFA Champions League while also admitting that the UCL has the best format right now.
“So we don’t need any other competition; today we have the best club competition, and with even better formats. That’s what we want, and it’s what Barcelona has wanted so far. We’ll see what happens next,” he concluded.
During the same assembly, Atletico Madrid CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin notably aimed a dig at Real Madrid president Florentino Perez for keeping the Super League alive in Spain.
“The reality is that it’s only being talked about in Spain, and that’s undoubtedly due to the importance of Real Madrid and its president as the driving force behind the idea,” he said.
Gil added that the idea of the Super League is dead everywhere else in Europe.
