Rangers have confirmed that Russell Martin has been relieved of his duties by the Ibrox club. Falkirk held Rangers to a draw at the Falkirk Stadium, resulting in the team bus being blocked from leaving.
Celtic helped pile further pressure on Martin with a late winner, that took the Scottish Champions nine points ahead of their city rivals.
In a statement on Sunday evening, Rangers confirmed that they had taken the decision to pull the trigger on Martin.
“RANGERS Football Club confirms that it has parted company with Head Coach, Russell Martin.
“While all transition periods require some time, results have not met the club’s expectations.
“Assistant Head Coach, Matt Gill, and First-Team Coach, Mike Williamson, will also be departing.
“Russell and his staff have worked exceptionally hard throughout their time at the club. We thank them for their efforts and wish them well for the future.
“Further updates from the club will follow in due course.”
There were troubling scenes after the game with Martin being forced to leave in a car; however, it now appears that this has been because he was relieved of his duties.
Martin took charge of 17 games in all competitions, winning 5 and losing 6. Although, he was on the receiving end of some awful abuse from the Rangers support despite clearly struggling in the role.
Celtic will face Rangers in the Premier Sports Cup Semi Final at Hampden in November. It remains to be seen who will be in the Rangers dugout when the sides meet at the National Stadium.
