Lutsharel Geertruida’s future at Sunderland is uncertain after his option-to-buy expired, potentially exposing the Black Cats to Leeds United interest this summer. Sky Germany reports the clause, valued at just under £20 million, has lapsed and RB Leipzig are aiming to sell him permanently.
Sky Germany adds Sunderland remain in contention after fresh talks and are seeking a lower fee. It says no decision has been made, and that the upcoming World Cup could give the 25-year-old a stage to enhance his prospects.
Letting the clause expire leaves Sunderland open to competition from home and abroad. TEAMtalk reports Leeds, Aston Villa, Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace monitored his situation late in the campaign, while clubs in Italy, Germany, France and Spain have contacted Leipzig.
Liverpool appear to have cooled their interest. Voetbal International reports the Reds explored a January move during an injury crisis, but, following Arne Slot’s departure, there is currently no contact with recruitment staff at Anfield.
The Dutch defender spent 2025/26 on loan at the Stadium of Light from Leipzig.
