Harry Kane scored his 12th Champions League goal of the season as Bayern Munich seized control of their Champions League quarter final tie, beating a sloppy Real Madrid side 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Luis Diaz got the breakthrough for Bayern Munich before the end of the first half, before Kane continued his blistering form in Europe just 22 seconds after half time to double the advantage.
Los Blancos found a way back into the tie when Kylian Mbappé pulled one back for the hosts, but they could not go on to find the equaliser to level the score ahead of their trip to the Allianz Arena for the second leg next Wednesday.
Bayern Munich looked to make a quick start when the ball fell to Konrad Laimer on the edge of the box in the first minute. He had a good sight at goal but failed to threaten Andriy Lunin in the Madrid goal.
Real Madrid were lucky not to find themeslves behind early on, but were finding some success on the counter.
Manuel Neuer’s miskick fell to Trent Alexander-Arnold after 16 minutes, who played a fantastic ball to Arda Güler for the Turkish international to slip Mbappé in behind, but Neuer saved with the one-on-one expertly.
Madrid were once again sloppy in defence allowing further pressure from Munich, but when the ball was eventually cleared they countered effectively once more. Mbappé led the break away before laying it into the path of Vinicius Junior, who forced another good save from Neuer.
Madrid were afforded a further chance when Vinicius’ cross was deflected awkwardly, nestling just under the crossbar before Neuer caught it.
The long-time German number one then gave the ball away again when his throw was intercepted by Alexander-Arnold, the right-back shot’s inside the box being blocked.
Munich would be afforded a flurry of chances from further defensive errors soon after, the first coming courtesy of Alexander-Arndold who played lacklustre pass into midfield. It was picked off by Munich, but Olise’s heavy weight of pass to Serge Gnabry put a stop to a promising chance.
Then a sloppy back pass by 18-year-old Thiago Pitarch back to his keeper minutes later was intercepted by Gnabry. All Gnabry had to do was put his shot either side of Lunin and he would have scored, instead firing his shot straight at Lunin.
After surviving this onslaught Madrid hit Munich on the counter in fantastic fashion. Neuer being forced to get down low to make a wonderful save from Mbappe’s shot across goal.
The first card of the game came after 36 minutes. A contentious booking as Tchouameni appeared to only graze Olise before he went down, meaning he will miss the second leg due to an accumulation of bookings.
Bayern Munich got their breakthrough after 41 minutes as Kane knocked the ball to Gnabry, who played a fantastic ball inside Alexander-Arnold to Diaz. A perfectly timed run and weighted pass combining to leave him clean through and he made no mistake, slotting the ball around Lunin to put the visitors ahead.
Real Madrid got the second-half underway by giving the ball away immediately when Alvaro Carreras caught on the ball in midfield.
Possession found Olise who played the ball across to Kane, and the England captain stroked the ball into the bottom corner from outside the area to put Bayern Munich two in front less than a minute into the second half.
Madrid looked to hit back and had a five-minute spell of controlled possession. However, they could only muster a few half-chances and snapshots from Mbappe and Vinicius that never really troubled Munich.
Munich looked to threaten from a corner once again as Lunin found himself in no mans land. Upamecano once more found the Madrid goal at his mercy, but he could only put his header wide.
On the hour mark, Upamecano was further involved at the other end of the pitch with a long ball causing him all sorts of problems before he made a weak header that left Vinícius Junior one-on-one.
Neuer did a fantastic job of closing down the angle and forcing Vinícius wide. However, the Brazilian was always favourite, but his shot was well wide. The Madrid crowd did not hide their feelings as boos rang around the Bernabeu.
Two minutes later Olise continued to threaten. This time making a fantastic run before cutting inside Carreras and putting his shot marginally over the crossbar.
Second-half substitute Jude Bellingham looked to rally Madrid back into the game and carried the ball effectively before laying the ball into Mbappe who forced another good save from Neuer.
Madrid threatened once more as Vinicius played a ball to Mbappe inside the box, but his shot failed to trouble Neuer.
After 74 minutes these chances paid dividends. A great low cross from Alexander-Arnold found Mbappe who tapped it in at the far post. Neuer made yet another fantastic effort to stop it, but the ball had already crossed the line.
A renewed sense of confidence seemed to flow through the Real Madrid side, and the crowd was revitalised. Madrid evidently believing this was their way back into this fixture.
Manuel Neuer was booked in the 82nd minute for delaying the restart and perhaps showing how the momentum of the game had shifted.
Eder Militao struck the ball well following the fallout of a Madrid corner and Neuer was forced into action once again.
Bayern Munich nearly put the tie to bed in the 89th minute as Jamal Musiala put the ball wide after the ball was knocked back to him by Alphonso Davies.
Munich appeared to overplay on this occasion and had many opportunities to strike on goal prior to Musiala’s chance.
Munich had another late chance but were not ruthless enough. Diaz carried the ball on the counter and Olise was through. But Diaz fizzed the ball past Olise and Real Madrid were allowed time to regroup.
Munich had a late penalty shout. A free kick was clipped into Kane who flicked it on to Olise who went down under pressure inside the box. Michael Oliver waved the appeals away and the incident was controversially not referred to VAR
The game ended soon after and Bayern Munich will be disappointed they did not kill the game off but can be extremely pleased with their performance.
