Real Madrid are all set to appoint Jose Mourinho as their new manager, and with the Portuguese’s arrival, there are also changes expected in the squad.

As already reported, the Merengues are looking to make signings in four positions, starting with a couple of centre-backs, a right-back to replace Dani Carvajal, a central midfielder, and a striker as well.

Such a spree would put the future of some of the current players’ spots in jeopardy moving forward.

Raul Asencio’s future uncertain

And, according to AS, one such player whose continuity is far from guaranteed at this point happens to be Raul Asencio.

At the moment, looking ahead to next season, Mourinho’s expected squad has Dean Huijsen, Antonio Rudiger, who has has agreed to a one-year extension, and the currently injured Eder Militao as the main centre-backs with secure places in the team.

And, with the club looking at the possibility of signing two more centre-backs, it leaves little to no room for Asencio in the first-team squad.

Mixed bag of a season for Asencio

Having enjoyed his breakthrough under Carlo Ancelotti last season, Asencio continued in the first-team dynamics this term, but enjoyed an up-and-down, inconsistent campaign.

Often the fourth-choice centre-back behind the aforementioned trio, the 23-year-old La Fabrica graduate has played 33 times in all competitions, scoring two and assisting one goal.

Asencio was had a falling out with manager Alvaro Arbeloa earlier this year after being axed from the team at a time when he had pushed himself to play through fitness problems when the team was facing an injury crisis.

With his contract running until 2031, it remains to be seen if Asencio accepts to move on or digs his heels in and opts to fight for a place in Mourinho’s team next season.
