It has been a disappointing season so far for Ferland Mendy at Real Madrid, with the veteran left-back having spent most of it out injured.

Indeed, the 30-year-old defender has played only thrice so far this term, totalling up to a paltry 112 minutes – his only start coming in the UEFA Champions League clash against Olympiacos.

Mendy close to returning

In a bit of a positive development, though, Melchor Ruiz of COPE reports that Mendy has entered the final phase of his recovery from his latest injury.

The 30-year-old has been sidelined with a muscle issue after featuring as a substitute in the Spanish Super Cup semifinal against Atletico Madrid, when he played 21 minutes.

However, as per the report, Mendy has resumed working on the pitch, albeit individually, and is making progress on his road to recovery.

There is still no set date for the left-back’s return as things stand, but he is in the last phase of his recovery and might be available at manager Alvaro Arbeloa’s disposal soon.

In the past few years, Mendy has spent more time out on the sidelines than on the pitch injured. As such, Real Madrid are understood to be open to parting ways with the defender in the summer.

With Alvaro Carreras and Fran Garcia available as options at left-back, Mendy’s potential departure makes sense from the club’s point of view.

However, there have been no real takers for the Frenchman, while the player himself has shown no indication of considering a departure.

For now, though, the focus will be on successfully recovering from his latest muscle issue and getting minutes on the pitch in the second half of the season.
