It was tense, dramatic and everything a neutral fan could have wished for during Sunday's Madrid derby.
A back-and-forth affair that ended with Los Blancos edging their city rivals 3-2 was met with a 17-year low for the hosts.
It was Federico Valverde in the limelight once again as the Uruguayan converted a trivela finish for 2-1 mid-game. Yet it all went from heaven to hell for Madrid's most in-form player in the 77th minute.
Valverde was shown a direct red card after a challenge on Alex Baena, where he hacked the player and not the ball. Team-mates and head coach Alvaro Arbeloa were enraged, and Valverde was confused.
It means he is the first Real Madrid player to be sent off in a La Liga derby against Atlético de Madrid since Clos Gómez sent off Sergio Ramos 17 years ago.
The last six red cards in derby La Liga matches had all been for Atleti players.
