Kylian Mbappe continued his stunning goalscoring form when France took on Azerbaijan last night as he found the back of the net in extra-time of the first half. What followed in the second period, however, comes as a serious worry for Los Blancos.

In the 83rd minute of the game, the Real Madrid star left the field limping as he asked to be substituted and the injury did not appear relatively minor.

The latest situation

Mbappe asked to be substituted out after feeling discomfort in his ankle, the same one that he injured last week. He left the field limping in pain and went directly to the dressing room without even staying on the sidelines until full-time.

In fact, L’Equipe go on to report that Mbappe’s international break is over and that he will return to Madrid immediately to undergo tests and start his recovery.

The France captain will not play a part in his national team’s next game vs Iceland, and will instead fly back to the Spanish capital. Needless to say, the development is worrying for Los Blancos.

What did the France coach say?

Didier Deschamps even addressed the concern in his post-match press conference, saying:

“He received another blow to his right ankle. It remains sensitive, less so than at the beginning of the week, but that’s often the case when you’re hit in an already painful area.

“We’re going to check that and get a medical update. He has this pain, more or less severe.”

The France manager, however, did mention that there was “nothing to worry at the moment.”

Mbappe has recorded his best-ever start to a campaign this season in terms of goals scored after ten games and has been the one carrying Real Madrid’s attack over the past few months.

With the likes of Getafe, Juventus, Barcelona and Liverpool all coming up on their schedule, Xabi Alonso and Co. will hope that it is nothing serious.

The coming days will reveal the exact extent of the player’s setback and nature of the injury he has suffered.
