Real Madrid unlikely to have ‘total rebuild’ this summer – Here’s why | OneFootball

Knocked out of the UEFA Champions League in the quarterfinal stage and now set to go trophy-less for the second campaign in a row, serious questions are being asked of Real Madrid’s players and manager.

Florentino Perez, who measures the team’s success in terms of silverware, believes that none of the last three managers have extracted the best out of the squad and that the core is capable of a lot more.

Apart from the manager, however, there is equal blame on the players and it appeared set that there would be wholesale changes to the team ahead of next season.

The practical situation

As confirmed by Mundo Deportivo in a recent report, however, it is unlikely that there will be a ‘total rebuild’ of the squad this summer, and the development is unrelated to the board’s lack of intent.

Left to the administrators, there would indeed be wholesale changes to the squad with several departures and arrivals to give the dressing room a new look.

However, 90% of the players in the team refuse to leave under any circumstances. They cite that they have a contract in place which has to be honoured, and they refuse to leave the team for greener pastures.

If every player refuses to leave, it is close to impossible for the board to plan and execute a rebuild. After all, any arrivals must be counterbalanced with adequate departures.

In that sense, the extent of changes in the summer will be very limited, at least in terms of the players in the dressing room.

There will be 2-3 changes to the squad as confirmed by the same outlet,  but it will be no more than that.
