Régis Le Bris says Sunderland have raised concerns over how Brian Brobbey is treated by referees, while stressing the job is demanding. The issue flared again in the 0-0 draw with Manchester United, when several calls went against the 24-year-old.

On Sky Sports’ Ref Watch, former referee Dermot Gallagher judged Stuart Attwell correct to give United a free-kick after a second-half tussle between Brobbey and Luke Shaw, arguing the striker committed the first foul.

Ex-forward Jay Bothroyd took the opposite view, saying Brobbey was unfortunate. He felt both players grappled and that the forward should have had the benefit of the doubt.

Le Bris was reluctant to criticise Attwell. He believes Brobbey’s physical profile can make him hard to officiate and that he may at times need more protection. He noted United had Maguire on one side and Martinez on the other, smaller but highly skilled, and both experienced.

He said Sunderland have made their feelings clear to officials across the season but described the overall officiating as fair on Saturday. He added that Premier League defending is strong and intense, and that Brobbey can get a raw deal because of his style.
