Régis Le Bris praised Lutsharel Geertruida after a strong return to Sunderland’s starting XI, and addressed a claim from Sky Sports Germany about the defender’s summer exit.
Geertruida was recalled with Dan Ballard suspended, his first start since March’s Tyne-Wear derby win over Newcastle United. He almost settled the game after the break, clipping the post with a strike from the edge of the area.
Le Bris said it was the right moment to bring the 25-year-old back and felt the performance vindicated the call.
He said he was unaware of any decision on the player’s future, stressing that Geertruida is a Sunderland player for now and performed well. With two games remaining, he added the defender will be with the club until the end of June.
The head coach said it is too early to discuss next season, and that any outcome will rest with the player, Sunderland and, in this context, another club. The report said Sunderland would not trigger a €23m option to buy, that the Dutch international would return to Leipzig initially, and that a permanent move elsewhere is being explored.
