There are transfer rumours, and then there are the moments when everything feels different. Florian Wirtz’s commitment to Liverpool feels like one of those rare, seismic events.
Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg delivered a major update, stating: “LFC received the final commitment from Florian Wirtz [on Friday], after a move to FC Bayern fell through. Liverpool will submit an official offer to Leverkusen shortly, with an agreement expected soon from both clubs.”
If this materialises, it won’t just be another signing – it will be a statement.
For a player once seen as destined for Bavaria, it’s a swing of huge proportions. Wirtz’s decision to bypass Bayern Munich, who baulked at a potential €150m (£126m) fee, and commit to Arne Slot’s Liverpool, speaks volumes. Not only about the club’s resurgence, but also about the Dutchman’s growing pull in Europe’s elite circles.
Plettenberg also dropped another bombshell: “Wirtz and Frimpong will soon be Liverpool players. Arne Slot was determined to bring both of them in.”

Frimpong, who has already passed a medical and signed, represents the type of dynamic, aggressive full-back that fits seamlessly into Slot’s envisioned system. But Wirtz? That’s artistry. Tactical intelligence paired with technical grace. He’s not just the heartbeat of Leverkusen’s title-winning season – he’s the metronome, the creator, the conductor.
Together, the pair represent not just reinforcements, but cornerstones.
If Wirtz becomes Liverpool’s record signing – and the most expensive German footballer ever – the optics are immense. Beyond the headlines lies the hand of Richard Hughes, who appears to be wrapping up two mega-deals before June.
In recent years, Liverpool have been known for their cautious, often delayed manoeuvres in the market. This, however, looks swift, decisive and ambitious.
Liverpool fans will know better than to count unhatched chickens, but this one’s hard to ignore. With Florian Wirtz reportedly giving his green light, and Jeremie Frimpong already across the line, the buzz is understandable.
For a club in transition after Jürgen Klopp’s departure, this double move has the makings of a dream start for Arne Slot. Both players come from a title-winning side and bring quality, energy, and technical finesse. Frimpong provides that right-sided dynamism we’ve missed since the younger Trent days, while Wirtz is pure silk – a natural playmaker who can carry, create, and dictate play.
Fans will be especially intrigued by Wirtz’s choice. Turning down Bayern isn’t something German talents do lightly. That he chose Liverpool instead signals the club’s current prestige and the faith being placed in Slot’s project.
There’ll be questions around the fee – over £100m for Wirtz is no small outlay. But given the player’s age, ceiling and resale potential, it’s hard to argue. Hughes deserves credit too. Acting this early sends a powerful message – Liverpool aren’t playing catch-up anymore. They’re setting the pace.
