Crystal Palace have opened discussions with Jean Philippe Mateta over a fresh contract, a move that reflects both the club’s faith in the forward and the wider interest building around him. While no agreement has been reached, sources described the dialogue as constructive and steady, with Palace relaxed due to the 18 months remaining on his current deal.

Mateta’s recent progress has inevitably attracted attention. According to Sky Sports, Palace are aware of growing interest in the striker, as well as in Daniel Munoz, Adam Wharton and Liverpool target Marc Guehi. One senior figure at the club was quoted saying, “We know the level he is performing at and conversations are ongoing in a positive way.”
The striker has been in excellent form, scoring six goals in 11 games this season and carrying the momentum from his red hot finish to the previous campaign. He has now broken into the France setup, marking his arrival with goals in matches against Iceland and Azerbaijan. Another source close to the negotiations said, “He feels settled, but like any player at his peak, he wants clarity about the project.”

Last season’s tally of 17 goals in all competitions helped propel Palace to FA Cup glory and secure European qualification. The club considers Mateta central to their ongoing development, recognising both his output and his growing stature. “We see him as a leader of the attack,” an insider added.
Interest from rival clubs is monitored closely, but Palace appear determined to shape discussions on their terms. With 54 goals in 171 appearances, Mateta’s value continues to rise and his next deal could define the next phase of his career.
Palace holding talks early sends a clear message that they value Mateta’s contribution and want to keep the core of a squad that delivered an unforgettable campaign, from the FA Cup triumph to the push into Europe. Fans will see this as overdue recognition for a player who has grown into a genuine focal point.
The concern lies in the growing interest from elsewhere. Supporters have seen this pattern before, where standout individuals attract attention from bigger spenders, and the fear of disruption becomes real. Mateta hitting six in 11 and earning international recognition means his stock is as high as it has ever been. Many fans feel this is the exact moment the club must show ambition, not hesitation.
There will also be a close eye on how the talks with other key players progress. Losing Mateta, Guehi or Wharton would feel like a backward step, especially when the side is trying to cement its place among Europe’s competitive ranks. Most Palace supporters will say, “Pay him what he deserves, keep the squad together and build on last season, not rebuild again.”
Overall, the sentiment is hopeful but cautious. The fanbase wants Mateta tied down swiftly, not only to protect his value but to signal that Palace fully intend to remain on an upward trajectory.
