Manchester United’s search for greater attacking threat has led them towards one of Europe’s most exciting wide forwards, with Caught Offside reporting that Rafael Leão is now the subject of serious interest.
The AC Milan winger remains under contract until 2028 and has a €175 million release clause, but that figure appears increasingly detached from the reality of the market. As reported by Caught Offside, “Milan may publicly want to keep him, but they are now more open to creative offers than they were in the past.”
United’s interest makes sense. Leão offers pace, power and unpredictability, qualities that have too often been missing from their attacking structure. The report states: “Leão is exactly the kind of player who gets big clubs excited.”

That description feels accurate. At his best, the Portugal international carries the ball with rare authority, isolates defenders and changes the rhythm of matches through individual quality.
Caught Offside claims United “are exploring a player-plus-cash deal and could offer players such as Marcus Rashford, Joshua Zirkzee or Manuel Ugarte to lower the fee.”
That is where this story becomes particularly intriguing. A straight cash deal at elite level would be difficult, but a structured proposal involving a player could appeal to Milan if they decide the time is right to reshape their squad.
The report adds that “Milan could open talks from around €50m if a strong player is included.” That would represent a significant shift from the release clause valuation.
United need more direct running, more fear factor and more match winning quality in wide areas. Caught Offside puts it clearly: “United’s interest is particularly interesting because they need more explosion in attack.”
Leão would not arrive as a low risk signing. His brilliance can come in bursts, and consistency has sometimes been questioned. Even so, United have lacked players capable of making defenders retreat from the first whistle.
Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Real Madrid, PSG, Bayern Munich and Barcelona have all been mentioned around Leão at different stages. That level of interest underlines his standing.
United’s challenge will be convincing Milan, the player and their own recruitment department that the overall package represents value rather than another expensive gamble.
From a Manchester United perspective, this is exactly the type of rumour that brings excitement back. Leão is not a neat, predictable signing. He is explosive, bold and capable of producing moments that change games.
United have spent too long looking blunt in wide areas. If there is a chance to bring in a player who can carry the ball, beat defenders and make Old Trafford rise, supporters will naturally be intrigued.
A swap deal also feels sensible. If Marcus Rashford, Joshua Zirkzee or Manuel Ugarte no longer fully fit the long term plan, using one of them to reduce the fee could be smart business. The key is discipline. United cannot afford another deal driven purely by name value.
Leão would bring risk, but elite attacking players usually do. The upside is enormous. He has the physical tools, the technical flair and the personality to become a genuine Premier League star.
For fans, this feels like the kind of move that says United want to be dangerous again. Not cautious, not functional, but frightening.
