Late Returns Signal Exit Strategy in Motion

A group of high-profile Man Utd players, who remain outside of Ruben Amorim’s plans for the 2025/26 campaign, have been instructed to train after hours at Carrington this week—only once the first-team squad and coaching staff have departed the facility.

This move affects several well-known names, including those who featured on loan last season. These players, having been granted extended leave to explore potential transfers, now return to the club under altered conditions. Training separately, away from Amorim’s core group, their presence at Carrington does little to mask the underlying message: their futures lie elsewhere.

Late Sessions and Lingering Uncertainty

While the facilities have remained open, those not included in the manager’s immediate plans are expected to work individually during evening slots. Although some, like one high-profile forward, have already returned to maintain fitness, none are being reintegrated into full first-team training.

Crucially, the separation isn’t limited to training hours. These players have also been instructed to attend Carrington this weekend, when the senior squad travels to Stockholm to face Leeds United in a pre-season fixture. That timing ensures minimal overlap with the main group and highlights the widening divide.

Internally, sources at Man Utd suggest that all five affected players expressed a desire to leave the club earlier this summer. However, figures close to some players contest this narrative, insisting they would have welcomed a return to the squad at the same time as their teammates.

Summer Business Hinges on Outgoings

The futures of these players have become central to Man Utd’s summer strategy. With Amorim targeting further additions—most notably Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo—sales are seen as a financial necessity before any significant investment can proceed.

One experienced forward, who was loaned to Aston Villa in the latter part of last season, is understood to prefer a move abroad, with Barcelona monitoring the situation after withdrawing from talks for Athletic Club’s Nico Williams.

Another winger, who spent time at Chelsea, is likely to be moved on, while discussions over the futures of others continue quietly in the background. A full-back, previously loaned to PSV Eindhoven, and a younger attacker admired by Chelsea, are also part of ongoing conversations.

United’s pre-season tour of the United States begins next week, where Amorim’s squad will meet West Ham United, Bournemouth and Everton. Their summer schedule concludes with a fixture against Fiorentina at Old Trafford on 9 August. Whether any of the aforementioned players are still on the books by then remains uncertain—but time is ticking, and clarity is needed.
