Liam Delap transfer race grows as Chelsea reshape squad and Everton watch closely

Chelsea’s summer has acquired a familiar rhythm, money out, money in, and then, almost immediately, more movement on the horizon. According to i Paper, the club’s determination to trim the squad while sustaining its transfer activity has put Liam Delap at the centre of a developing market, one that may yet have consequences for Everton.

The numbers frame the story. Chelsea “raised almost £300m through departures last season and have already banked around £120m this summer”. The report adds that figure “could soon rise towards £160m”, a reminder that, for all the noise around spending, the club’s strategy rests as much on disposal as acquisition. In that context, Delap is less a cast-off than an asset, valued “at between £35m and £40m” and now attracting serious attention.

Liam Delap market takes shape

“The i Paper understands Liam Delap has three serious suitors, with more clubs expected to enter the race for the striker,” and the list is revealing. Nottingham Forest want depth and variation around Chris Wood. Leeds United are watching, though their room for manoeuvre appears limited after the James Trafford deal, “worth around £40m”. Everton, meanwhile, are described in the simplest and most urgent terms. “The Toffees are in desperate need of firepower and sources say Delap is viewed as an ideal focal point.”

That phrase, ideal focal point, matters. Delap’s profile remains attractive even after “only one Premier League goal in an injury-hit debut campaign in the capital”. Centre-forwards are judged on goals, naturally, but they are also judged on the shape they give a team, on occupation of defenders, on the ability to turn territory into pressure. Clubs in need of structure up front often pay for potential as much as production.

Chelsea transfer strategy remains relentless

At Chelsea, the route back to prominence can be blocked in an instant. With Danny Welbeck “expected to arrive from Brighton shortly” and Emmanuel Emegha “also set to be integrated into the squad”, the report suggests Delap “is unlikely to get the chance to challenge Joao Pedro for the central striking role”. Others may follow him out. “Nicolas Jackson will almost certainly leave”, while Axel Disasi, Benoit Badiashile, Trevoh Chalobah and Marc Guiu are all in the frame for departures.

This is the modern elite squad as marketplace, constantly revised, permanently fluid. For Chelsea, Delap is a saleable piece within a broader recalibration. For Everton, he may represent something more precious, a centre-forward around whom an attack can finally make sense.

Our View

From an Everton perspective, this feels like one of those links that makes sense until the price comes into focus. You can absolutely see why David Moyes would like him. The report says he is “viewed as an ideal focal point”, and that sounds about right for the kind of striker Everton have missed, someone physical, direct and young enough to improve.

Still, there is always that little voice of caution. If Chelsea really want “between £35m and £40m”, then it becomes hard not to wonder whether Everton are being used to strengthen a market rather than truly lead it. Forest may be able to move faster, and Leeds, even with tighter funds, can sometimes surprise if sales happen quickly.

There is also the question of risk. Delap managed “only one Premier League goal in an injury-hit debut campaign in the capital”. That does not mean he cannot succeed elsewhere, far from it, but Everton have had too many windows where potential has been sold as certainty. Supporters would want reassurance that this is a proper fit, not another expensive gamble dressed up as a long-term project.

And yet, if Moyes really does believe in him, there is a logic to it. Everton do need firepower. They do need a striker who can occupy defenders and give the midfield a target. If the fee can be controlled, and if the structure of the deal is sensible, this is the sort of move that could feel bold rather than reckless. Unsure? Definitely. Intrigued? Absolutely.
