Tottenham have gone big in the market and the consequence is obvious, somebody in midfield is going to feel squeezed out. According to TeamTalk, that player is Lucas Bergvall, with the young Swede now pushing for a move after Spurs landed Mateus Fernandes for £85m and moved to complete Sandro Tonali’s £100m deal, made up of £92.5m plus £7.5m in add-ons.
This is what happens when a club stockpiles quality in one area without European football to spread the minutes around. You can call it ambition, and it is, but you can also call it congestion. Roberto De Zerbi will soon have Tonali, Fernandes, Bergvall, Archie Gray, Rodrigo Bentancur, Pape Sarr and Conor Gallagher competing for central roles. That is not healthy for everyone involved, especially younger players who need rhythm, not promises.
Tonali has already explained why he is heading to north London, saying: “For sure Roberto de Zerbi has been crucial for me to join Spurs. He played a big role. I can’t wait to work with him.” Fine. Spurs supporters will love the sound of that. But every arrival has an effect somewhere else, and Bergvall appears to have read the room quickly.
The key detail from the report is clear: “Sky Sports News has been told that Lucas Bergvall still wants to leave Tottenham.” That cuts through all the usual transfer window fog. It also adds that Bergvall “has been told he will not be leaving the club this summer”, which leaves Tottenham heading for a stand-off with a player who sees his pathway narrowing by the week.
The reasoning is straightforward enough. “It is understood that the Sweden midfielder wants to play regularly in his favoured No 8 position next season and feels a move away from Spurs would allow him to do this.” No drama, no mystery, just a footballer wanting football.

Nottingham Forest are watching closely after their major sale of Elliot Anderson to Manchester City for £116m. The suggestion is that Forest believe Tottenham could bend if an offer of around £45m arrives, with a sell-on clause attached. That is serious money for a player Spurs still insist is not for sale.
The report states: “Nottingham Forest are very interested in a potential deal and expect his fee to be in line with what Brighton are paying for Spurs defender Luka Vuskovic, which was £45m plus a sell on.” Other clubs in England, Spain, Italy and Germany are also said to be monitoring the situation.
Tottenham do not have to sell. They also do not want the distraction of an unhappy player lingering in a position already packed with options. If Bergvall stays, De Zerbi must convince him there is a real plan. If he goes, Spurs will expect a premium.
From a Spurs fan perspective, this is one of those problems you would rather have than the old ones. Tottenham are signing elite midfield talent, smashing transfer records and acting like a club with proper ambition. Tonali and Fernandes through the door is a statement, and if that creates tension lower down the pecking order, so be it.
That said, Bergvall is not some random squad player. He is talented, intelligent and looks like someone who could become a huge asset. So if he really wants out, Spurs should not panic and should not undersell. £45m plus a sell-on clause starts a conversation, but it does not feel like enough in this market for a player with his ceiling.
Supporters will also trust De Zerbi to be honest. If Bergvall has a role, spell it out. If he does not, cash in properly and move on. What Spurs cannot do is drift into the season with a frustrated player, no Europe, and too many midfielders expecting minutes. That is how dressing-room noise starts.
Still, the bigger picture is exciting. Tottenham are building a squad with real power in the middle of the pitch. Tonali brings class, intensity and authority. Fernandes brings pedigree and expectation. If this is the level Spurs are shopping at now, fans have every right to believe something serious is being built.
