Portugal head coach Roberto Martínez has lauded Filipe Luís after the Flamengo manager delivered the 2025 Libertadores and Brasileirão titles.
"I was very surprised by Filipe Luís's ability to prepare games. To speak about one game, I really liked his preparation for the match against Bayern Munich. Not many teams can play the way he set his side up," he said, speaking to ESPN.
"It shows he is a coach with great tactical knowledge and that he is using his experience as a player in La Liga and the Premier League very well. And his players are using that fantastically. I loved the tactical planning against Bayern, it shows his capacity and his ideas as a coach."
After a long saga between Flamengo and Filipe Luís, the club have extended his deal to December 2027. He now targets further silverware in 2026.
Flamengo finished 2025 having played 78 matches, with 49 wins, 18 draws and 11 defeats. The team lifted six trophies, the Supercopa do Brasil, the Carioca, the Brasileirão, the Libertadores, the Dérbi das Américas and the Challenger Cup.
With the under-20s representing the club at the start of the campaign, Filipe Luís is not yet on the touchline. Flamengo face Bangu on Wednesday, 14, at 21:30 Brasília time at Moça Bonita in the Carioca opener.
