According to Le Progres, 85 people were injured after serious crowd trouble marred the German Cup tie between Waldhof Mannheim and Kaiserslautern on Friday night. The match was halted for around 30 minutes.
Authorities had classed the derby as high risk because of the rivalry between the sets of supporters. The game, between third-tier Mannheim and second-tier Kaiserslautern, was paused at the end of normal time with the score 0-0.
Rockets were launched from the Kaiserslautern section towards the main stand, and Mannheim fans then streamed onto the pitch.
After a large police operation on the turf to push people back towards the home end using force, play resumed. Kaiserslautern went through thanks to a goal in the 120th minute.
Among the injured were 33 federal officers and two from Baden-Württemberg, all described as lightly hurt. Eight people were taken to hospital for further treatment.
About 1,400 officers were deployed to secure the fixture between the two western German cities, which are roughly 50 km apart. Investigations have been opened for insults, bodily harm, property damage, public order offences, violence against police and breaches of explosives laws.
