Manchester City midfielder Rodri has issued a fresh update on his future at the football club off the back of another trophy success at the Etihad Stadium.
The timing of the Spaniard’s comments adds substantial weight to an already historic week for Pep Guardiola’s squad, as City secured the coveted domestic cup double on Saturday afternoon courtesy of a stunning 71st-minute flick from Antoine Semenyo.
Behind the scenes and away from the action, however, the midfielder’s long-term future remains a major talking point across Europe, alongside the ongoing uncertainty concerning Pep Guardiola’s own future beyond this campaign.
With heavy interest in Rodri seemingly building from Real Madrid and continuous internal negotiations regarding an improved extension to his current contract, every word from the Spanish lynchpin is being closely monitored.
Speaking to reporters after Manchester City’s FA Cup Final win over Chelsea on Saturday afternoon, Rodri was quizzed on his future at the football club, amid claims of interest from Real Madrid and conflicting reports indicating contractual talks at the Etihad Stadium.
“I’m calm. As I said a while ago, I’m only thinking about my club, about finishing the season with as many titles as possible,” insisted the Spain international.
He continued, “We have the chance to win the Premier League and then the World Cup. Right now, I’m not thinking much about my future. I’ll be honest with you because there’s another priority.”
Saturday afternoon also marked Rodri’s return to competitive action following his latest in injury frustration. Reflecting on his comeback, the 29-year-old said, “I’m very happy to be back.
“It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster ride, because I didn’t have a very serious injury, but choosing the right moment to return wasn’t easy because I kept trying and having doubts.”
He added, “Today I also had doubts before the match started, but it ended very well and these 65 minutes are very good for my body… [the recent injury] was just a small thing, although you always have the fear that it might become something bigger.
“Today I was able to pass the test, so to speak; I felt relatively well. Obviously, I was still missing that 20 per cent, but it’s a matter of weeks.”
Rodri’s successful 65-minute shift at Wembley Stadium perhaps dispels immediate fears over a groin injury that kept him out of action for a succession of crucial matches in recent weeks, including the most recent 3-0 Premier League win over Crystal Palace.
The Spanish midfielder’s re-integration into the starting line-up alongside captain Bernardo Silva provides Pep Guardiola with his preferred tactical insurance policy as the campaign reaches its climax.
The priority now shifts directly to the final stretch of the domestic season, where Manchester City are continuing to be tasked with hunting down Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal in a relentless race for the Premier League crown.
Once the domestic dust settles and the direction of the English top-flight title is finalised, Rodri will shift his focus to global domination with him and his Spanish teammates heading out to North America later this summer for the FIFA World Cup in Mexico, the United States, and Canada.
