Sunderland could face competition from Roma if they revive interest in Bologna defender Jhon Lucumi during the summer window.

The Black Cats were heavily linked last year, with an official offer reported, but Bologna rejected it after failing to find a replacement, and Sunderland instead completed a successful move for Omar Alderete.

Bologna are now said to be seeking a successor for Lucumi, a development that has increased the chance of a deal being revisited in the close-season.

Sunderland are believed to be keen to bolster their defensive options, although it is unknown whether Lucumi will be among their targets again.

In Italy, Roma are reported to have Lucumi back among potential signings amid uncertainty over Evan Ndicka’s future at the Stadio Olimpico. The Ivory Coast international is said to interest several Premier League clubs, with Roma thought to value him at about £35m, and his exit could prompt a move for Lucumi.

Notably, Sunderland have been described as “the only obstacle” to Roma’s pursuit, with their ongoing interest in the Colombia international also claimed.
