Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo became the unexpected hero in the team’s thrilling 2-1 win over Girona, scoring a decisive injury-time goal that sent Montjuic into celebration.

His surprising role as a makeshift striker turned out to be the difference, helping the Blaugrana return to winning ways at a crucial point in the season.

Brought on in the closing stages, Araujo delivered when it mattered most, turning into an attacking force and heading home the winner.

After the match, the Uruguayan expressed his delight, stressing how vital the three points were ahead of the coming week.

“It was important to get the three points ahead of this week’s big La Liga game (El Clásico against Real Madrid). To be honest, it was a tough game for us.

“Girona stood up to us and played very well. They had a lot of chances, but the important thing is that the team showed desire and character until the end,” said Araujo.

From striker to defender – and back again

Araujo’s late goal came as a reminder of his attacking instincts, something not entirely new for the Uruguayan.

Before becoming a centre-back, he actually played as a striker during his formative years at Boston River, and his experience certainly came in handy.

“We knew we were coming off two tough defeats, but with hunger and hard work, we knew we could get the win today.

“Looking ahead to this week, with the Champions League as well, it’s important to go in with confidence,” said Araujo.

He added, “After a win, everything changes and you work differently.”

Reflecting on his rare appearance up front, Araujo shared with a smile.

“Everyone knows I used to play as a striker. I think if I played as a striker, I could score a lot more goals (laughs). When the coach asked me, I didn’t hesitate to say yes.

“When I got there to put on the shirt, I said, ‘If I go on, I’ll score,’ and everyone laughed afterwards when I did. I work to be able to play for the team, so I’m happy about that,” he concluded.
