Portugal paid tribute to Diogo Jota after beating Croatia 2-1 to reach the World Cup last 16, exactly one year after his death.

Diogo Jota died on 3 July 2025 in a road accident in Spain alongside his brother André. Ronaldo said in a post that they had won for themselves, for Diogo and for Portugal.

On the pitch, Cristiano Ronaldo gathered his team-mates and, in tears, posed with a shirt bearing 21, Diogo Jota’s favourite number.

The tribute followed qualification for the last 16.

It was a poignant moment of remembrance for their late team-mate.
