Rosalía, a 33-year-old Barcelona devotee, was in the stands as Spain beat Austria 3-0 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on Thursday. Her love of football long predates the 2026 World Cup.
Wearing Spain’s Euro 2000 away shirt and a Roja scarf, she was repeatedly picked out on TV while seated near Penélope Cruz, even as Lamine Yamal tormented the Austrians. Her hit Despechá rang out after each Spain goal. Mundo Deportivo later said Yamal is the Rosalía of football.
The Catalan superstar, whose tracks have amassed more than 14 billion Spotify streams, was at Camp Nou in March for Barcelona’s Copa del Rey semi-final second leg against Atlético Madrid. She celebrated Raphinha’s penalty, though Barcelona lost the tie 4-3 on aggregate after the first-leg defeat.
Born in Sant Esteve Sesrovires, 40 km from Barcelona, she openly backs the reigning Spanish champions. In 2023, as part of the club’s Spotify partnership, the Motomami logo adorned the shirt for El Clásico against Real Madrid, and she remixed El Cant del Barça.
She has said concerts and matches stir a similar emotion, with human energy concentrating as thousands share the same moment. Her favourites by age and nostalgia include Messi, Eto'o and Zidane, and she has also expressed admiration for Pedri and Mbappé when the Frenchman was still at Paris Saint-Germain.
On Thursday she posed with Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas, with Cruz also in the photo. The pair have known each other for years, and in 2022 Putellas presented Rosalía with a Los 40 award, which the singer said came as a surprise.
