Uproar at Estádio da Luz as Benfica's draw with Braga left José Mourinho's side in a troubled fight for second, two points behind Sporting, and supporters turned on president Rui Costa.
The protests began before the final whistle, moments after Jean Baptiste Gorby struck in the 88th minute to put Braga ahead. According to Glorioso 1904, chants targeted Rui Costa, with calls for his resignation.
Vangelis Pavlidis levelled from the spot and hope briefly returned, yet the draw felt like a defeat. At full time the mood soured further, not least with confirmation of Sporting's heavy win in Vila do Conde.
Benfica's players approached the stands to thank supporters but were met with loud boos and insults. Some near the area usually occupied by the No Name Boys shouted that the team were a disgrace.
Rui Costa again became the focus of anger, with fresh abuse audible around the ground. Tension near the presidential box prompted intervention from stewards and private security, and the incident was filmed.
White handkerchiefs were waved across the stadium, underlining a deepening rift between fans, team and board. As the run-in bites, the night only added to doubts over Rui Costa's project.
