San Mames to honour world champions as Luis de la Fuente watches on | OneFootball

San Mames will salute Athletic’s new world champions on 22 August, the LaLiga 26/27 opener against Sevilla. Unai Simón, Aymeric Laporte and Nico Williams will step onto the pitch to be honoured, with former Lion and current national coach Luis de la Fuente applauded from the directors’ box.

According to El Correo, the occasion will also recognise Elene Gurtubay and Ziara Vega, European Under-19 champions in Bosnia.

The match will be preceded by a minute’s silence, and Athletic will wear black armbands in memory of Carmelo, an Honorary Member and club legend who died on 6 July.

Carmelo guarded Athletic’s goal for 14 seasons. He won one league title in 1955/56, three Cups in 1954/55, 1955/56 and 1957/58, and the 1950 Copa Eva Duarte.

He was in goal for the Once Aldeanos final against Real Madrid and the unforgettable snow match against Manchester United.
