Manchester United’s hunt for a midfielder to replace Casemiro keeps rumbling on.

Ideally, INEOS will need a defensive midfielder who is Premier League proven to come in for the Brazilian, which means Ederson is not seen as a like-for-like replacement.

The Red Devils had initially zeroed in on Elliot Anderson, but as things stand, Manchester City remain in pole position, even though United have not given up hope.

The pursuit of Mateus Fernandes keeps on getting complicated, due to West Ham’s asking price and Real Madrid’s entry into the race.

Sandro Tonali complications

Sandro Tonali had emerged as a top target, but his asking price and wages meant it would not be an easy deal to complete, especially as Newcastle were expected to stand firm in their hopes of keeping the Italian.

However, The Telegraph have some good news on that front. The report has revealed that the Magpies have reluctantly accepted the fact that the 26-year-old will be leaving St. James’ Park this summer.

In order to prepare for the former AC Milan star’s departure, Newcastle have already identified a replacement on the market.

Interestingly, the Premier League side are adamant that they will not sell for less than £100 million, with a potential deal for Anderson seen as the benchmark for Tonali’s sale.

Good news for United

“In the centre of midfield, Senegal international Lamine Camara is a 22-year-old who emerged at Metz and has had two seasons as a first-team regular at Monaco. He has featured prominently in recruitment meetings, but is thought to be just one of several names under consideration should either Joe Willock or Sandro Tonali leave this summer.

“As painful as it might be for supporters, they should also brace themselves for another big-name departure.

“Tonali could also leave before the start of the season – although the asking price of about £100m will inevitably cause problems for interested parties – and some within the club expect rather than fear his departure. The Italy international’s agent has been offering him to clubs in England and Europe, hoping to persuade someone to bid for the 26-year-old.

“The important thing for Newcastle is their succession planning. They already know who they want to sign should Tonali leave. That does not mean he will definitely be sold, but they are prepared for that scenario. The belief is that the price Nottingham Forest fetch for England international Elliot Anderson will set the market value for Tonali, who they rate just as highly.”

Can United win the race for Sandro Tonali?

The valuation and wages will be a problem, but it will be interesting to see if Sandro Tonali puts pressure on Newcastle to reduce their asking price.

It would make things easier for United. Arsenal are also lurking, which means Newcastle are hoping for a bidding war. This saga is unlikely to be resolved any time soon.
