Santi Cazorla has retired from professional football, closing his time as Real Oviedo’s captain and talisman. According to Superdeporte, his contract expired on 30 June and he will not remain at the club as a player.
The announcement had been coming. In May he indicated the decision was already made, agreed with his family and the club, and would be confirmed in due course.
Club president Martín Peláez has said Cazorla could stay linked to Oviedo in some capacity if he wishes. After a conversation with Julián Calero, the decision was finalised.
Born in Lugo de Llanera, the 41-year-old shone for Villarreal, Málaga, Arsenal and Al-Sadd, alongside two spells with Oviedo. He returned to Asturias to help deliver promotion to Primera in 2025, then showed his class again on the club’s top-flight return last season.
With Spain, he won Euro 2008 and Euro 2012 and appeared at a World Cup.
A severe ankle injury once left him close to retirement and even to losing part of his foot, yet he fought back to produce a near miraculous second act.
His next role is not yet official, though it could be directorial or representative, keeping his bond with Oviedo. He leaves as an Adopted Son of the city, with a square to bear his name, a Descenso del Sella honour and a lasting tribute at the Carlos Tartiere.
