Santos have paid two months of overdue image rights to the squad on Friday 21. The move reduced a backlog built up in recent months.
According to Diario Do Peixe, the payment came a day after the current month’s due date and covered both the current instalment and a previously delayed one.
It is the first time in months the club have settled two periods at once. If the next instalment is made on time, Santos could wipe out sums tied to player remuneration.
Santos carry debts of more than R$ 1 billion. The situation has triggered two transfer bans this year, the first in February over a sum due in the João Basso deal with Arouca, which was later paid and the sanction lifted.
A second ban has been in place for about two months, with around R$ 12 million owed to Monaco for Jean Lucas, now at Bahia, to register players. The board have yet to clear it, prioritising squad obligations and keeping day-to-day bills covered during a decisive stretch.
Progress in the Copa Sudamericana after eliminating Macará in the last 16 brought about R$ 3.5 million. In the Copa do Brasil, progression past Remo delivered roughly R$ 4 million. The sale of Adonis Frías to Atlas was agreed at R$ 19.5 million.
Following Friday’s payments, wages are up to date and only one image rights instalment remains outstanding. If further cup progress brings more prize money, the club could again pay two instalments next month and move closer to full regularisation.
