Sarina Wiegman has said Leah Williamson remains a doubt for England vs Spain on Tuesday, with the Lionesses set to make a final call after training at Wembley.
Arsenal captain Williamson was included in the squad despite her recent hamstring issue and limited club minutes, with England taking a cautious approach to her involvement.
This latest Injury Update matters given the level of the test in front of England. Williamson has missed recent Arsenal matches after suffering that setback in March, and Wiegman has already spoken about managing her carefully in the squad, as seen in her earlier comments on Leah Williamson’s England return and the wider picture around Williamson’s recent injury concerns.
Speaking ahead of the Spain clash, Sarina Wiegman said: “Leah Williamson is a question mark for tomorrow. She’ll be on the pitch today and we’ll make the decision after this training session.”
“She doesn’t have to prove anything. We balance it, we’ve been careful with her. She’s good in the plan, but I don’t want to give anything more away. She’s moving forward well.”
That leaves Leah Williamson under assessment rather than ruled in or out, with Women’s Football’s fine margins especially clear against world champions Spain.
If she is involved, it looks more likely to be within managed minutes rather than a full load, given both her recent hamstring issue and the need to avoid any further setback.
England host Spain at Wembley on Tuesday 14 April, with kick-off at 7:45pm BST, in a major World Cup qualifying test before the trip to Iceland on Friday.
The Lionesses go into it after a strong start in the group, and the broader qualifier picture was outlined in England’s recent win over Iceland under Wiegman.
