Despite the last-gasp victory over Sassuolo, Lazio manager Maurizio Sarri wasn’t in an entirely pleasant mood after the match.

Lazio Prevail Over Sassuolo

The Biancocelesti ended a four-match winless run in Serie A by beating the Neroverdi 2-1 at a virtually empty Stadio Olimpico. Daniel Maldini opened his account for the club with a second-minute strike, but Armand Lauriente restored parity. In the dying embers of the game, Adam Marusic nodded home the winner to kickstart the celebrations.

In his post-match interview with DAZN (via Lazio Press), Sarri insisted that his team deserved to win based on their number of chances.

The win was something we wanted and pushed for. It would have felt unjust to end it 1–1. We also went through a few difficult spells, but overall we did more than they did, so it was a relief to secure a deserved victory. It was also a tough match. We already had some major absences, and then right at the end of the first half we also lost Cataldi and Romagnoli. I thank the players for a second half full of spirit and heart.

Player Ratings: Lazio 2-1 Sassuolo – Mario Gila Back at His Best

The 67-year-old confirmed his desire to continue to field Maldini as a centre-forward, while urging him to round out his game to become a complete striker.

He can certainly do it. Of course, he still needs to progress. I like technical players. He’s a technical player with the physical traits to play as a central striker. He has the athletic dynamics, but he doesn’t always manage to use them; he still has to take steps forward in attacking the box and the goal.

Maurizio Sarri Pleads with Lazio Management to Take Action

On a separate note, Sarri took the opportunity to voice his irritation with the situation at the club, urging the management to act swiftly and decisively.

What can the club do? I don’t know — I’ve never been a director or a president. The story goes back a long way. Someone at the club will know what the biggest problems are and how to intervene, but something has to be done. We can’t keep going like this; it’s depressing. I’ve decided to stay at Lazio since June for the Lazio fans, and now even I don’t know anymore why I stayed (in a reference to the absence of the protesting fans). So something has to be done.

The Tuscan manager then doubled up on the unpleasant situation in his post-match press conference (via Lazio Press)

I don’t know. I’m sure they (Lazio officials) must be thinking about something, but something will have to be done. For the team it’s discouraging and damaging. It’s a situation you can manage in the short term, but in the long term it becomes unmanageable. I hope something will be done.

Sarri Delivers Updates on Cataldi & Romagnoli

Sarri then offered updates on Danilo Cataldi and Alessio Romagnoli, who left the match prematurely after sustaining knocks.

After Provedel, it was tough to see Cataldi and Romagnoli also forced to stop. But that gives even more credit to a team already in difficulty, where even a player out of position performs well. A 1–1 would have been unfair — if you look at the full 90 minutes we had many more chances than they did. The lads put their heart and soul into it. Cataldi picked up a tightening in his calf, but it will be checked on Tuesday. The same issue applies to Romagnoli: he had a hematoma from a knock he took against Atalanta and I think that caused the muscle tightening.

Patric Acted as Regista

The head coach surprisingly replaced Cataldi with Patric, fielding the Spanish defender as a deep-lying playmaker.

I think Belahyane is doing well. But we needed someone who could move the ball quickly. Patric used to play as a midfielder many years ago, and we’ve been trying him in that role in training. It could have been nonsense, or it could have been the right idea (laughs).

Finally, Sarri reserved words of praise for 21-year-old goalkeeper Edoardo Motta, who made his Lazio debut due to Provedel’s season’s ending injury.

Motta had a good game and made some good saves. He needs to improve his distribution with his feet. That’s something he’ll have to work on.
