Scott McTominay has successful heart surgery as return timeframe revealed | OneFootball

Napoli and Scotland midfielder Scott McTominay has successfully undergone corrective surgery following the diagnosis of a minor heart issue.

The 29-year-old former Manchester United player was found to have a mild benign arrhythmia, an irregular heart rhythm considered non-serious that presents no significant danger to his overall health.

Having travelled to Manchester for the operation on Tuesday, he is set for a fortnight on the sidelines.

A statement from the Italian club confirmed: "On Tuesday morning, Scott McTominay underwent an ablation procedure at Spire Manchester Hospital. The operation was a complete success.

"McTominay will rest for two weeks and then resume training."

Napoli had outlined the expected timeframe last week, confirming the player should be "available again after the international break".

In addition to missing his side's Champions League clash with Arsenal on Wednesday night, McTominay will be unavailable for the start of Sebastien Pocognoli’s tenure as Scotland manager, sitting out Nations League fixtures against Slovenia twice, Switzerland and North Macedonia.

McTominay had started Napoli’s opening two Serie A matches this season, but was substituted after 56 minutes of a 2-1 home defeat by Como on 30 August.

He then missed Saturday’s 3-2 loss against defending champions Inter Milan, watching on from the sidelines as Napoli threw away a two-goal advantage.

Massimiliano Allegri’s men had been in control of the match after two goals in three minutes from Matteo Politano and ex-Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund at the start of the second half.

However, Inter fought back, with goals from Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram levelling the score at 2-2. Martinez then popped up in the first minute of added time to seal Inter’s comeback victory.

With McTominay set to only return to training in two weeks, he will not feature in Napoli’s next three games against Arsenal, Bologna and Fiorentina.

However, if he avoids any setbacks upon his return to the squad, he could be in contention to play in Napoli’s first match after the international break against Frosinone on 10 October.

McTominay is into his third season at Napoli after leaving Old Trafford, and he played a key role in the team winning the Serie A title in 2024-25.
