Sepp Blatter criticises Infantino plan to sell World Cup stakes, says football belongs to the people | OneFootball

Backlash across football has intensified since Tuesday evening over Gianni Infantino’s proposal to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors. Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter has now condemned the plan.

Speaking to Reuters after voicing concerns on X on Tuesday, the Swiss said the game does not belong to any individual or institution, it belongs to the people.

Blatter argued football would lose its soul if it were turned into a profit-driven corporate structure.

The former FIFA chief, who led the organisation from 1998 to 2015, has long been a fierce critic of his successor. He has never been convicted despite facing several trials on corruption and fraud-related matters.

Earlier this year he called for a boycott of the 2026 World Cup, and he strongly criticised Infantino in an interview late last year.
