Leeds United are among the clubs monitoring Southampton duo Shea Charles and Leo Scienza after Saints missed out on promotion to the Premier League.

Southampton’s expulsion from the play-offs means the club are braced for a hectic summer transfer window, with several high-profile exits on the cards.

Tonda Eckert’s side enjoyed a remarkable 2026, with Hull the last Championship team to beat Saints in the league on January 17.

But, the ‘Spygate’ fallout ended their promotion dream, and the club must now prepare for their new financial reality of another year outside the top flight.

Whilst parachute payments remain in place, the reality is that Southampton will need to make cuts, and there will be a host of players in the squad who feel they deserve the chance to play in the Premier League.

Shea Charles and Leo Scienza can expect big pay rises if they join Leeds United

Shea Charles and Leo Scienza are among those who are attracting admirers, with reports claiming that Leeds United are considering deals for the midfielder and the winger.

Given the way the duo have performed, most would expect them to be able handle the step up, so Southampton know they have a big job to convince either to remain at St. Mary’s Stadium for another shot at promotion.

However, if they do depart, the south coast side will demand big fees for Charles and Scienza, so they won’t be easy deals for Leeds to do.

Whilst the transfer fees may take some negotiating, it’s unlikely that the player wages will be an issue for the Whites.

We must stress that these figures are estimates, but Capology states that Scienza is on £20,000 a week at Southampton.

Clearly, he would expect a major pay rise if he joined Leeds, with the same site estimating that they are paying £100,000 a week to top earner Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Of course, Scienza may not get a similar salary, but it shows the scope they have to pay bigger wages as a Premier League.

Meanwhile, Capology believes that Charles is on a salary of £10,000 a week, which does seem very low. Either way, the ex-Man City youngster would be another that Leeds would have no bother in sorting a pay rise for if the move happened.

Yet, the level of competition for both players could play into the hands of Charles and Scienza, as their agents will no doubt be pushing for the best contracts possible if fees are agreed.

Southampton must reinvest their money wisely this summer

As mentioned, Saints will be prepared for this level of interest in their star players, and it’s no exaggeration to say their starting XI will look very different when August comes around.

But, that doesn’t have to be a bad thing, and the club proved last summer that they are capable of making some shrewd signings, with Scienza undoubtedly one of the best additions in the Championship.

So, whilst it would be a major setback to lose the Brazilian, or Charles, the club should be in a position to reinvest a chunk of that on new signings.

Obviously, the immediate priority is clarifying the managerial situation, and that is a huge decision facing the hierarchy at Southampton.

Then, it’s about getting to work on building a squad that can challenge for promotion next season, as that will still be the aim for the club.
