There was a weight of expectation on Lys Mousset when he signed for Sheffield United, but where has it gone wrong for the former Blades forward?

Sheffield United have had their fair share of signings over the years that have struggled to make a notable impact, despite the somewhat hefty fees that might have been paid for them.

One player that could fall into the category of potentially paying too much is former Sheffield United forward, Lys Mousset, who had a mixed spell at Bramall Lane between 2019 and 2022.

Mousset first caught the eye with French side, Le Havre, and 14 goals in 36 appearances saw him earn a move to AFC Bournemouth, whilst they were playing their football in the Premier League.

The Frenchman found it tough to kick on with the Cherries in England's top-flight though, as he didn't score more than two goals in each of the three seasons he was with the club.

He then made the move to Sheffield United for a fee believed to be in the region of £10million, which was a club record fee at the time of his arrival.

Lys Mousset 'still divides opinion'

Football League World's Sheffield United fan pundit, Jimmy from Blades Ramble, issued his thoughts on Mousset's time at Bramall Lane, and was impressed with the Frenchman's impact with the club.

"He still divides opinion amongst the Blades fanbase, even now! I think if you look at the initial impact that he had as a signing, yes it was big money, but he had a huge impact.

"That was when he had the strongest effect on the team when he first signed in the first six months. He scored some really important goals, and put in some really good performances."

Verdict issued on Lys Mousset's struggles

Mousset's time with Sheffield United was disrupted with off-field troubles, with the Frenchman struggling with a family bereavement whilst with the Blades back in 2020.

The Sheffield United fan pundit went on to issue his thoughts on why Mousset's time with the club wasn't as successful as he would have originally hoped for.

"The most disappointed out of everybody will be Lys Mousset, because he is one of those players that could have been top quality if he'd have looked after himself and put his career first. But, unfortunately for the lad, it looks like off-the-field ill discipline has probably got the better of him, which has seen his career fade. He was a really strong signing when he first came to the club."

Mousset left Sheffield United in 2022, as he moved to German side, Vfl Bochum, although he didn't play a single game with them, where a serious Achilles injury saw his spell in Germany disrupted.

A brief spell in Ireland with Bohemians followed, although Mousset found it somewhat tough to find his best form, scoring just once in his nine appearances for the club.

Nowadays, Mousset is turning out for Canadian side, Vancouver FC, having signed for the club on Monday 23rd March 2026. He'll be looking to make a fast start to life with Vancouver, and at the age of 30, he'll certainly feel as though he's got something to offer at a high level.

The days of playing in the Premier League amongst the world's elite might be beyond Mousset nowadays, though, and his time with Sheffield United will be one that the Blades fanbase continue to look back at what could have been.
