FLW's Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit has given his verdict on whether the club should look to sign Manchester City loanee Jaden Heskey permanently.

Having been forced to operate with a threadbare squad in the Championship last season, Sheffield Wednesday had plenty of work to do in the transfer market this summer to put a competitive team together ahead of their return to League One.

The Owls brought in 18 new signings during the summer window, and there were a few familiar faces among those additions, with Reece James and Barry Bannan both returning on permanent deals, while Jaden Heskey re-signed on loan from Manchester City.

Heskey spent the second half of last season on loan at Hillsborough after his January arrival, and he quickly became a regular in midfield, making 20 appearances for Wednesday on their way to relegation from the Championship.

The 20-year-old has made just one senior appearance for City so far, and after being deemed surplus to requirements by new head coach Enzo Maresca, he was allowed to depart the Etihad Stadium again this summer.

Heskey completed his second temporary move to South Yorkshire on deadline day, and he has already regained his place in the Owls' team, starting in the 2-1 win at Peterborough United on Saturday that sent Henrik Pedersen's men top of the table.

When asked if the club should make a permanent move for Heskey next summer, FLW's Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit Patrick McKenna admitted the Owls are fortunate to have been able to bring him back on loan, and he insisted that they should explore signing him on a full-time basis if he performs well this season.

"I think Jaden Heskey is certainly one to keep on the radar," Patrick told FLW.

"In fact, we're lucky that we have him for the season.

"We'll get a chance to see what he can do in normal circumstances because I just don't think last season was a time where you could judge any player.

"If he shows potential this season, I think it would be smart to see if we could take him from Man City.

"There seems to be a good relationship there between the clubs.

"I'd imagine, at a certain stage, they may think that Heskey doesn't have a future there, so I'd like to think that we will keep monitoring him.

"I have confidence that he will do well for us this season, so the possibility of him signing for us permanently will have to be considered."

Heskey will turn 21 in December, and, in truth, if he was going to make it at Manchester City, he would likely have made his breakthrough by now, or at least have been involved with the first team on a more regular basis.

However, Heskey's only senior appearance for City to date came as a substitute in a Carabao Cup win at Huddersfield Town last September, and with the Premier League giants signing three high-profile midfielders this summer in Elliot Anderson, Ayyoub Bouaddi and Enzo Fernández, there is no clear path for him to gain more minutes.

With that in mind, Heskey may need to look for a new permanent home after his loan spell at Hillsborough comes to an end next summer, and Sheffield Wednesday would surely be in pole position to land his signature, particularly if they were to win promotion to the Championship this season.
