Sheffield Wednesday have made 12 signings this summer, but they have already missed out on some players in the transfer market.

Mason Burstow is the latest to sign for the club, shortly after goalkeepers Connal Trueman and Ashley Maynard-Brewer agreed to arrive. It means Sheffield Wednesday are shaping up well ahead of the first league game of the season.

As a League One team, there are going to be other promotion contenders that compete for players you are after, while some Championship clubs might also beat Sheffield Wednesday to their transfer targets.

FLW's Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit Patrick McKenna was asked about one deal they have missed out on, with Aston Villa's Tommi O'Reilly emerging as a serious target for Wednesday, which FLW exclusively revealed in July.

It appears as though Notts County are set to win the race for O'Reilly, with more regular game-time perhaps on offer at Meadow Lane. We asked if he thinks this could come back to haunt Wednesday, or if he is losing little sleep over the collapsed deal.

Patrick told FLW: "This summer was always going to be a massive rebuild of the squad, which is going to involve a lot of hard work.

"In this here, things are going to go your way with deals and we have got deals through already, and like with any transfer negotiation, you also lose some.

"In this case here, Tommi O'Reilly didn't end up at Wednesday. I won't have regret over it because I don't think we lost out by doing anything wrong. It's not the [Dejphon] Chansiri era where you'd find out that we had done something stupid in negotiations.

"Despite how well the new owners have done in transfer and contract negotiations, you aren't going to win them all. We just have to keep our focus now and keep building our squad."

There have been other occasions where Wednesday have come to regret missing out on players, but Patrick does not think this will be one of them.

McKenna added: "There's certainly no point losing any sleep over it. It's nothing huge. I don't think it's going to be a significant one and one we will look back on in our history with regrets.

"It's hardly losing out on Eric Cantona because we wanted him to play on grass before we signed him. So, yeah, we move on with the rebuild. I have huge confidence in our recruitment team. So, we just move on."

Of course, 12 signings represent an excellent start to Sheffield Wednesday's summer rebuild under David Storch and Arise Capital, giving Henrik Pedersen a far stronger platform than many supporters might have expected at this stage of the window following relegation.

The additions have added depth across the squad, while the arrivals of two new goalkeepers in recent days have largely eased any concerns between the posts. Equally, if Wednesday can retain the core of their current defensive unit for the remainder of the transfer window, the back line may not require much more attention.

There are, however, still a few obvious gaps to fill. A physical, ball-winning midfielder capable of breaking up play and providing greater protection in front of the defence would add an important dimension to the side.

But it is further forward where Wednesday would also benefit from at least one more attacking addition, although two would be ideal. O'Reilly could have been one of those as a winger or playmaker. That said, a pacey winger could offer another outlet in transition.

If there is still more squad space and budget left, a creative attacking midfielder or wide playmaker would help unlock stubborn League One defences. If those areas are addressed, Wednesday's squad should look extremely well-equipped to mount a serious promotion challenge.
