Donny van de Beek suffered a serious muscle injury and had to be substituted in Girona’s La Liga clash with Athletic Bilbao on Tuesday evening.
The 28-year-old started in the 1-1 draw, doing so for Girona for the first time after a difficult start to the season, but his return wouldn’t end up being a happy one.
The former Ajax man screamed in pain after injuring himself in his own half during a move around the 33rd minute. Voetbal International are speculating that Van de Beek has torn a hamstring or calf muscle, although that information has not yet been disclosed by the club. Fotmob information suggests it’s a ligament injury with an expected return date as far back as late December 2025.
Manager Míchel saw it unfold from the sidelines and knew something was wrong right away. He immediately brought Portu on from the bench. This brought an unfortunate end to Van de Beek’s second match of the season, in which Girona sacrificed an early Azzedine Ounahi-powered lead to a Mikel Jauregizar strike just after the break.
