L’Equipe reports that Monaco want to keep Simon Adingra but are unlikely to trigger Sunderland’s £14.8m option following his loan spell.
The Ivory Coast international moved in January after limited minutes on Wearside. He made 16 appearances and 11 starts, mostly at left wing-back, with his loan running to 30 June.
His deal carried a €17m purchase clause, about £14.8m. Monaco also paid a €1m loan fee, roughly £870,000, and the report noted a €7.5m option, about £6.5m, in Wout Faes’ loan from Leicester City.
Monaco are operating in a difficult financial climate, linked to reduced Ligue 1 TV rights income and uncertainty around European competition.
They are considering alternatives, which could include trying to renegotiate the fee with Sunderland or exploring another loan. Adingra remains under contract with the Black Cats until 2030.
Monaco are also interested in keeping Faes, though not necessarily via the option currently in place. For Sunderland, Adingra’s future is one to watch this summer, with his minutes in France maintaining his value and profile.
