Chelsea face off against FC Twente on Wednesday night in the Champions League early kick off.

When speaking to the Dutch media ahead of Chelsea’s European curtain raiser, Sonia Bompastor teased that two of her stars could start as they return home.

The Blues coach was asked if Wieke Kaptein and Veerle Buurman are in line to start on Wednesday.

“I would like to give you the answer,” the head coach smiled. “But I’m someone who really likes to bring some surprises, so you will have to wait to see the line-up!

“Of course, I know it’s important for them to return to their country, and both of them want to play in this game. It’s something I have in my mind. All their families are coming, too.”

The Chelsea lineup will be confirmed at 16:45 BST on Wednesday, with kick off against FC Twente at 17:45.

Bompastor’s team are favourites to win the clash in Twente as they look to do what Arsenal couldn’t and kick off their European campaign with a win.

Sonia Bompastor praises Veerle Buurman

Bompastor continued to give a glowing report of Buurman who has featured just twice for the Blues so far this season.

“Veerle is a really good player, a young player, but she has a lot of talent,” Bompastor said. “I think she already proved that from the first minute she played in the WSL.

“Our league is really competitive, and she was able to perform and make an impact for the team. We are happy to have her in the squad. It feels like she’s been part of the group for more than just a few weeks.”

The 19-year-old joined Chelsea at the end of last season but was immediately loaned back to PSV at the beginning of the year.

“As the Chelsea manager, I love that the competition is so high. She’s competing with other really good players.

“Sometimes, my choices are about picking the best from that competition in the squad, but it’s also important to rotate so the players are as fresh as they can be going into every game.”

Since returning to Chelsea at the beginning of this year, Buurman has been used sparingly by Bompastor.

The centre back did start in Chelsea’s 1-0 win over Leicester at the end of September and looked good, so there is a good chance she’s given a huge opportunity on Wednesday night in what would be her Champions League debut for the club.
