Southampton’s appeal against their expulsion from the Championship play-offs is due on Wednesday, as further details emerged of alleged spying around their semi-final with Middlesbrough.
According to The Athletic, performance analyst Will Salt was seen behind a tree near Middlesbrough’s training ground filming tactical work two days before the first leg. Messages sent by German coach Tonda Eckert to Salt were also cited.
Salt was reportedly set for a second visit but fled after being confronted by Middlesbrough staff, and CCTV footage has since leaked. He had previously watched Oxford and Ipswich Town during the regular season, wearing an Eastleigh tracksuit from a fifth-tier club for the latter.
Southampton drew 0-0 in the first leg then won 1-0 after extra time in the return, yet were removed from the play-offs over the allegations.
Eckert, appointed in November after Will Still, has indicated he did not realise such practices are prohibited in England. At 33, he could face sanctions from the Football Association.
Southampton’s players were furious to learn on Monday, at the same time as the media, of the decision. They planned to train on Wednesday as usual, while Hull City, the other finalists, have had preparations disrupted.
