Spain go top of FIFA rankings after World Cup final win over Argentina | OneFootball

Spain have moved to number one in the FIFA rankings after beating Argentina in the World Cup final. The Albiceleste drop from top spot.

Spain won 1-0 after extra time in the decider. According to L'Équipe, the victory also returns Luis de la Fuente’s side to the summit just six months after they left it in January.

They have not dropped off the FIFA podium since 18 July 2024, following their Euro triumph.

Argentina, who led the standings before the tournament, extend a long-running pattern. Since FIFA introduced the rankings in 1993, no team starting a World Cup as number one has gone on to win it. Argentina came close to ending that run.

Brazil came closest at the 2002 World Cup, but reclaimed first place on 1 June, the day after the tournament began.
