Spain go top of FIFA ranking after World Cup win over Argentina | OneFootball

Spain are the new FIFA number one after beating Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the World Cup final.

L'Équipe reports that La Roja have replaced the Albiceleste at the summit, Argentina having led the list before the tournament.

Luis de la Fuente's side reclaim top spot just six months after losing it in January. They have not fallen out of the top three since 18 July 2024, following their Euro victory.

The first-place curse in this ranking endures. Since the system was introduced in 1993, no team starting a World Cup as number one has then won the tournament.

Argentina came close to breaking it. Brazil nearly did so in 2002, but returned to number one on one June, the day after the competition began.
